Installing
Windows 2000
Before you begin your
installation:
First: You must have a user account with EECS to complete this process. To get a user account, fill out the form at EECS Research Account (UNIX/NT/IMAP) Request Form.
Second: You must have a computer account with EECS.
To get a computer account, fill out the form at Computer
System Activation/Update Form.
Click on the ‘Register a new system’ link. You will need to login using your ldap user
name and password. To get an ldap user
name and password, see the first step.
In the Computer
System Activation/Update Form include the media access control or
MAC address of your system. To determine
the MAC address, open the command prompt by clicking; Start → Programs →
Accessories → Command Prompt, then type ipconfig /all in the open command window. The ‘Physical Address’ field gives the MAC
address of the local system. It looks
like XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX where X is equal to an alpha numeric value that is
represented by 0-9/A-F.
Submit the Computer
System Activation/Update Form. When support for the system has begun
you will receive a response from the EECS hostmaster indicating that you can
begin the installation process.
Third: Make a backup of all the data on your hard drive, especially your bookmark file. Make sure this data is saved in your home directory or to some other external storage space. Contact your system administrator if you need assistance.
Fourth: Make sure your system meets the hardware requirements. If you have any questions about your hardware compatibility or the compatibility of third party hardware please consult the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List for Windows 2000 at Windows Hardware Compatibility List.
Microsoft Suggested Minimum:
IDSG Recommended Minimum:
All Windows machines in EECS are required to be DHCP clients. There are no exceptions to this policy. If you require a fixed IP we can configure the DHCP server to assign one to your system, given a reasonable justification.
