Install W2K via RIS

Please Note:

• All Windows machines in EECS are required to be DHCP clients. There are no exceptions to this policy. If you require a fixed IP we can configure the DHCP server to assign one to your system, given a reasonable justification.
• By default the designated technical point of contact on the Computer System Activation/Update Form will be able to install the OS.
• Note in the Computer System Activation/Update Form comments field to enable others to install the OS.
• The user installing from RIS must authenticate using their Windows 2000 domain username and password.
• RIS formats the entire hard drive as a single partition; if this is not the desired behavior use the CD media for installation.
• RIS automatically joins the host to the EECS domain.

Prerequisites:

• Your host must meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 2000 Professional.
• Your host must be on a RIS aware network All EECS production networks are RIS aware networks.
• Your host must have either a:

o NIC/BIOS combination that supports PXE or

o remote installation boot disk.

• To create the remote installation boot disk:

o Insert a formatted 3.5” floppy into a host that is already supported on the EECS domain.

o Click this link, \\winsww\sww\public\ris\rbfg.exe, click open and the utility will run. Or copy the path into the Run command prompt from the Start menu.

o The RBFG utility loads a network client onto the floppy capable of connecting your host to the RIS server. However your host’s NIC must be supported in the Adapter List. To see the Adapter List run the RBFG utility.

If your host does not meet these prerequisites, follow the directions for installing off the CD.

Installing the OS:

Boot the target host off either the NIC or the remote installation boot disk and follow the onscreen instructions. Remember to remove the remote installation boot disk once the installer starts.
